Privacy Policy
MarineWise is a maritime learning and study platform for people interested in maritime subjects, including seafarers and maritime examination candidates. This Privacy Policy explains how information may be collected, used, stored, and shared when you visit or use MarineWise at app.marinewise.co.
By using MarineWise, you acknowledge this policy. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the service.
1. Information we handle
- Account and profile information: information you provide when registering or updating your profile, such as your name, email address, and selected maritime user type or learning stage.
- Sign-in information: when you use Google sign-in, authentication is handled through our authentication provider. We receive account information made available for sign-in, such as your email address and basic profile details. We do not receive your Google password.
- AI conversations and feedback: questions, prompts, attachments you choose to submit, AI responses, and feedback you send. These are processed to provide and improve the service and to support usage limits and troubleshooting.
- Learning content and activity: materials you upload, study progress, bookmarks, notes, examination practice activity, and related content you choose to save. Some features may store information in your browser; other features may store it on our servers or storage providers.
- Technical and usage information: information needed to operate, protect, troubleshoot, and limit abuse of the service. Hosting or infrastructure providers may also generate standard technical logs.
2. How we use information
We use information as reasonably necessary to:
- create and maintain accounts and authenticate users;
- provide maritime AI assistance, learning tools, notes, study materials, examinations, and other requested features;
- enforce usage limits, maintain security, prevent misuse, and troubleshoot errors;
- respond to support or privacy requests; and
- maintain, evaluate, and improve MarineWise and its reliability.
3. AI processing and third-party providers
When you submit a question, attachment, or other content to an AI feature, the relevant content may be sent to OpenAI to generate a response. Do not submit passwords, payment-card details, confidential shipboard information, personal information about others, or other sensitive material unless it is strictly necessary and you are authorized to share it.
MarineWise uses third-party services to operate, including authentication/database and storage services (such as Supabase), application hosting (such as Render), AI processing (OpenAI), and Google sign-in if you choose that option. These providers process information as needed to deliver their services under their own terms and privacy policies. Information may be processed in countries other than the country where you live.
MarineWise does not control the independent privacy practices of third-party providers. Review their policies before using their services.
4. Storage and retention
Information may be stored in your browser, in our application systems, or with service providers, depending on the feature. Browser-stored notes or preferences may remain on the device until you clear them or the relevant browser data. Server-stored information is retained for as long as reasonably needed to provide the service, maintain security and records, resolve disputes, and meet applicable legal obligations. Actual retention periods can vary by data type and provider.
Deleting browser data does not necessarily delete information stored on our servers, and deleting an account may not immediately remove copies held in backups or records that must be retained for legitimate operational or legal reasons.
5. Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell personal information for money. We may share information with service providers that help operate MarineWise, when you ask us to share it, when necessary to protect the service or users, or when disclosure is required by law or valid legal process. We do not make your private uploaded study materials publicly available merely because you upload them; however, avoid uploading material unless you have the right to use it.
6. Security
We use technical and organizational measures intended to protect information. No website, network transmission, or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Keep your sign-in credentials private, use a secure device, and notify us if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
7. Your choices and rights
You can choose what information to provide, decline optional features such as Google sign-in, and remove browser-stored information by clearing the relevant browser data. Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or restriction of certain personal information. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request and may retain information where permitted or required by law.
8. Children
MarineWise is intended for people using maritime learning and professional-development tools. It is not designed to knowingly collect personal information from children in violation of applicable law. If you believe a child has provided personal information inappropriately, contact us through the available MarineWise support or contact channel.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as MarineWise changes. The effective date at the top indicates when the current version was published. Continued use after an update means you acknowledge the updated policy, to the extent permitted by law.
10. Contact and privacy requests
For questions about this policy or requests concerning your information, use the support or contact channel made available within MarineWise. Include enough detail for us to understand your request, but do not send passwords or other authentication secrets.
